Family half-term outreach at Matlock Moor and Tansley
For half term week we created a family treasure trail for the surrounding areas of the two churches I'm working with, Matlock Moor and Tansley.
The theme was of course light as this half term was leading towards Halloween. We placed pictures of symbols of light around the area, each representing a letter and creating a code. The families collected or downloaded a leaflet which contained the instructions, a message written in-code and a map then set off 'searching for light'. When they had found the clues it revealed the message – The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has never put it out, John 1v5. We hope the message alone bought a little light into the darkness that can be Halloween. The trail at both venues appears to have been downloaded or collected on average of 40 times.
The trail ran over the first half of the week, at the end of the trail the two venues independently held an open house evening for anyone to come to who wanted to collect a prize. Both venues were lit with fairy lights and offered hot chocolate. The prize given was a beautifully illustrated book from scripture union 'Jesus is the light', some sweets, a little thanksgiving pumpkin craft and a few other bits. Both nights were well attended including by families that had never stepped inside the buildings before which was an absolute blessing. We pray that the event was enjoyed by those that attended and those that took part in the trail.
